Today Sound Data Science, a new non-profit organization based in Seattle, has launched its website to showcase its mission, services, and projects. The organization aims to maximize the value of research by working with researchers to improve their data systems and the availability and transparency of their data. Not ones to shy away from challenging problems, the organization is looking to partner with research groups to create secure and robust open source platforms to automate data sharing and use publicly-funded data for the public good. The organization seeks to empower ordinary citizens to engage with environmental data.
Jane Lauckner Ph.D. brings her research science expertise together with her non-profit leadership experience in her role as Sound Data Science's founding Executive Director. Jane leads a small team of expert database and website engineers who have years of experience working together to create advanced custom open source platforms with a strong security focus. Jane and team are supported by the Sound Data Science founding board members, Steve Katz Ph.D., Anna Kagley, and Jennifer Scheuerell. The founding board members have been colleagues for twenty years.
Sound Data Science's first project is to continue development of the Shoreline Monitoring Database project led by the Washington SeaGrant and the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences. The organization staff developed the existing database and website and are thrilled to continue the collaboration under Sound Data Science.
"Sound Data Science provides the expertise in database and website development that many of us hope to have on our team. This is instrumental in making projects more than what they might otherwise be, expanding the impact and longevity of our collective resources. Plus, they're fun to work with!"
- Jason Toft, University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
