Shoreline Monitoring
Date
We began developing the Shoreline Monitoring database and website in 2018.
Work
We designed and built a new custom database-backed website to present shoreline monitoring protocols and accept data collected using those protocols from citizen scientists. Subsequent funding allowed us to add more protocols and include maps and data visualizations.
Funders
This project is supported by funds from Washington Sea Grant, a leader in research, outreach and education for nearly 50 years. Based at the University of Washington, Washington Sea Grant helps people understand and address the challenges facing Washington’s ocean and coasts. Washington Sea Grant is one of 33 programs within the National Sea Grant College Program, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce.
Shoreline monitoring is an online resource to upload data from standardized protocols for monitoring shorelines in Puget Sound, WA.
Shoreline monitoring is often a desired or required goal of community science groups and local entities, but protocols and guidelines can be hard to find and misleading if not used appropriately.
To overcome these obstacles, the shoreline research and management community needs standardized approaches for monitoring and a “toolbox” of protocols and information.
The Shoreline Monitoring Database emphasizes simple and affordable methods that can be used for monitoring restoration sites and evaluating status and trends. The database is coordinated with the Puget Sound Ecosystem Monitoring Program’s (PSEMP) Nearshore Work Group in order to provide resources for technical expertise.
